Upsets can lead to flight path deviations that can quickly exceed the limitations of your aircraft. Learn how aircraft flight testing and certification efforts comprehensively consider the potential for high speed upsets, and what you need to know to stay safe.
Imagine encountering a high altitude upset. Losing altitude and gaining airspeed fast, you are approaching the 'Barber Pole', that dashed line that you have worked your entire career to stay below. Will the wings stay on through your recovery? How might your aircraft behave differently? Those questions have been asked and answered by test pilots that have visited high speed limits, and exceeded them. This is the story of how that is accomplished, by a test pilot whose job it was to go to those parts of the envelope that most of us earnestly avoid.
Main Speaker and Subject Matter Expert - Capt. Steve Stowe is a graduate of the USAF Test Pilot School, where he also served as an instructor. As a military test pilot he was the Chief US Air Force Test Pilot for the F-15, and flew an exchange tour with the Royal Air Force Fighter Test Squadron in England. Following military service, Steve joined Delta Air Lines flying the B727, 737, 757, 767, and MD-11. As a civilian test pilot, Steve has held senior flight test positions with Boeing Defense Systems, Bombardier, and Mitsubishi Aircraft Company. In these positions, Steve has flown envelope expansion flight tests in multiple new fighter aircraft, commercial airliners, and business jets.
Steve was joined by APS's VP Training, Randall Brooks, a highly experienced corporate pilot, UPRT Instructor, and air show hall of famer, together to deliver an insightful and valuable session together. The event wraps up with a moderated Q&A panel to address attendee questions.
